The Structural Engineering QE is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Oct 16th, 2021.
Candidates must notify by email Prof. Elbanna (elbanna2@illinois.edu) and Ms. Miller (marissam@illinois.edu) of their intent to take the QE no later than Wednesday, September 29th, 2021.
Assistant professor Shelly Zhang (BS 12, MS 14) has been invited to become a review editor of the journal Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (SMO), considered the flagship journal in her research field.
“SMO journal is at the converging frontier of design, engineering, simulation, additive manufacturing, AI and digital-twins,” Zhang said. “I was very honored and excited to receive this editorship invitation.”
Typically only tenured professors are invited to serve as review editors for SMO, but the journal made an exception in Zhang’s case, citing the fact that Zhang has already built a very strong reputation through her research and her strong commitment to serving the research community and recognizing her to be “among the most active and qualified reviewers” for SMO.
The SMO journal explores a wide range of topics dealing with optimization involving at least one major engineering discipline such as solid, fluid, thermal, electric, electromagnetics and more. As of 2020, the impact factor of SMO is 4.542, meaning it is in the top 10 percent of journals in terms of the number of times its papers are cited.
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has awarded professor Paolo Gardoni the 2021 Alfredo Ang Award on Risk Analysis and Management of Civil Infrastructure for his contributions to risk, reliability and resilience analysis, and his leadership in these fields. The prestigious award is given to an individual who has made significant technical or technological contributions to the field of risk analysis and management of civil infrastructure.
The award was established to honor Alfredo H.S. Ang, the developer of practical and effective methods of risk and reliability approaches to engineering safety-and-design structural criteria formulation. Ang earned his M.S. (1957) and Ph.D. (1959) degrees from CEE at Illinois, and served on the CEE at Illinois faculty from 1959 until his retirement in 1988.
“It is a huge honor for me to receive this award established to honor Professor Alfredo Ang,” Gardoni said. “What makes it even more special is the fact that Professor Ang was a distinguished faculty in our Department and the advisor of my advisor, Professor Armen Der Kiureghian. Professor Ang is one of the fathers of the field of risk and reliability analysis, and already had a profound influence on my career since I hold the Alfredo H. Ang Family Professor endowed position.
“This award is an amazing recognition of the work that my research group has done over many years. I am very thankful to all the students, post-docs and visiting scholars who contributed to this recognition.”
Gardoni has been on the CEE at Illinois faculty since 2012, where – in addition to holding the Alfredo H. Ang Family Professor endowed position – he is Director of the MAE Center, and an Excellence Faculty Scholar in Civil and Environmental Engineering. He is also a professor in the Department of Biomedical and Translational Sciences in the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, and a Fellow of the Office of Risk Management and Insurance Research in the University of Illinois Gies College of Business. Gardoni is the author of over 170 refereed journal papers, 28 book chapters and 8 edited volumes, and has delivered over 60 invited, plenary or keynote lectures. He is Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Reliability Engineering and System Safety published by Elsevier.
Professor Paolo Gardoni has been appointed Visiting Professor in Structural Engineering and Societal Risk Mitigation at Loughborough University’s School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering. Gardoni will support undergraduate and postgraduate programs, with seminars on Engineering Risk Analysis, Reliability Analysis and Engineering Ethics. Loughborough is located in Leicestershire, U.K.
“I am thrilled by the opportunity to collaborate with faculty and students at Loughborough University,” Gardoni said. “We share the same passion for first-class education and ground-breaking research. I am convinced that this partnership will be mutually beneficial.”
Gardoni’s appointment began on July 1, 2021.
Gardoni joined the CEE at Illinois faculty in 2012, where he is the Alfredo H. Gardoni’s research interests include probabilistic mechanics; sustainable and resilient infrastructure; reliability, risk and life cycle analysis; decision-making under uncertainty; performance assessment of deteriorating systems; modeling of natural hazards and societal impact; ethical, social and legal dimensions of risk; optimal strategies for natural hazard mitigation and disaster recovery; impact of climate change; and engineering ethics.

Carol J. Drucker, SE, PE, P.Eng, is a Principal of the firm Drucker Zajdel Structural Engineers in Chicago, IL. She has worked extensively on the structural design of many projects throughout the country and is recognized as an industry leader. She received her Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University and her Masters Degree in Structural Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. She has authored articles on connection design and currently serves on AISC’s TC-6, TC-2, and Specification Committee.

INTERNSHIP SCOPE OF STUDY
FM Global’s research group, based in Norwood, MA, is seeking an intern for 2021 to study in the area of Structures and Natural Hazards research.
Our objective is to increase technical knowledge and to provide loss prevention solutions to FM Global and its clients. Theis intern will work as part of research projects under the supervision of senior staff within the Structures and Natural Hazards Area of FM Global’s Research group. This internship offers the student an opportunity to assist with and perform scientific and engineering projects, with a focus on seismic design information and seismic loss.
Applicants must:
• Be enrolled in a participating college or university and provide a current transcript.
• Be a graduate-level student and be in academic good-standing for graduation.
The study period will be determined by mutual agreement.
